"If there ever came a day when truth was so soundly defeated that it never emerged but sank under the shear volume of untruth that the world produced, it would be a sad day." Alexander McCall Smith
"If you're not honest, what are you?" child interviewed on the news
(This is purposely posted after the fact because it is not a political statement but a personal one...this is just the most recent event...a timely culmination that led me to meander.)
I watched the Kavanaugh hearings from the UK. Heard the testimonies from both Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford. I found both compelling.
I thought how sad it all is. If she is lying, it is sad. If she is telling the truth, it is sad. If he is lying, it is sad. If he is telling the truth, it is sad.
It is sad because all we really need is the TRUTH but where is it?
Who took TRUTH and how do we find it again? Do we even want to?
I feel this keenly because in virtually every role I have had in my 70 years, it is the absence of truth that has brought the most profound pain to me.
So watching the path that has brought us to this place....and now watching what is happening now that we are AT this place, I just feel sad.
We appear to be an entire country uncertain of the Truth, deciding in lieu of that certainty, to hope the 'side' we most align with (based on party, bias, life experience, weariness with the whole mess, whatever!?!?), is the place to land...and if that means Truth may not be found there, so be it!
We are deciding our children's future on a thread of hope that SOMEONE is telling the truth.
But that is a thread that will break.
And that makes me sad.
